The Germans
Before world war one happaned, the German immigrants were living happily in Canada and blending in with the Canadians' customs and traditions. That all changed after 1901, when the Germans were in the triple entente and became one of Canada’s enemies in the war. The problem was population was increasing in Canada which became a concerning problem, and force them create a plan to take action towards the Germans. The problem was that the Canadians thought the Germans were going to invading Canada, and the number of unemployed "enemy aliens" became concerning, making officials hope that these people would go to the U.S. In the end, however, the government ordered that those who could not support themselves should be interned because the government was afraid that the Germans were plotting to threaten Canada.
The fear of Germans in Canada grew after Germany invaded Belgium and attacked the British and French. This event turned Canada against this immigrant group completely. This was because the Canadians thought that the Germans were dangerous pepole to be around with and would danger their well being. The Canadian government then decided to take away their rights and everything they had and sold it in autions. The government also made the War Measures Act of 1914 which allowed them to take the rights, arrest people, and allowed them to keep information away from them. Also, this act can allows the governmetn to put anyone in an internment camp to make sure that Germans and other “enemy aliens” wouldn’t become a threat later on. later in 1916, violence became the form of protest against the Germans because they thought it would be the only way to control "dangerous people". in the same year, the citizens made a anti-German league, run by Canadians. These people eliminated government position jobs and stopping immigration from Germany.
Between the years of 1914 – 1918, this act, placed about 2,000 Germans were sent to internment camps throughout B.C because of the Canadians' xenophobia of Germans at that time. When the Germans were in the camps, their freedom to leave this country without a permit was taken along with their country's pride. Canada thought by putting to them in those camps, they stopped the Germans from sabotaging the country, but later on, the Canadians realized that the Germans never intended to do such thing, and yet the Canadian government spent over four million dollars on the camps because of that reason.
was it justified
The internment camps and treatment towards Germans weren’t never unjustified because the Canadians were torturing innocent Germans and thought that they were doing a good deed for the country by keeping it safe from the Germans, and yet, the Germans just wanted a peaceful life in Canada, but instead, they got prejudicial treatment and became “enemy aliens” in Canada because of a few conspiracies Canadians had about them.
